Tasmania will host two AFL Women’s fixtures in 2019, with games to be played at both ends of the state.

It has been confirmed today that the North Melbourne Tasmanian Kangaroos’ inaugural season will kick off with a blockbuster Sunday afternoon clash against Carlton at the traditional home of footy in Hobart, North Hobart Oval.

The Kangaroos’ second home game (round three) will also be in Tasmania, with the side set to take on the reigning premiers – Western Bulldogs – under Friday night lights at the University of Tasmania Stadium in Launceston.

AFL Tasmania CEO Trisha Squires welcomes the announcement.

“This is an exciting announcement for Tasmania, especially with the North Melbourne Tasmanian Kangaroos’ first game being held at theĀ traditional home of footy in Hobart, North Hobart Oval,” she said.

“With a Friday night blockbuster also being scheduled at UTAS Stadium in round three, Tasmanians will be treated to two terrific spectacles as history is made with the continued growth of the AFLW competition.

“I am sure our Tasmanian girls in the Kangaroos’ squad will be eagerly awaiting the opportunity to play in front of family and friends in their home state.”

This news comes off the back of three Tasmanians – Nicole Bresnehan, Chloe Haines and Libby Haines – being selected by the North Melbourne Tasmania Kangaroos at the AFL Women’s Draft earlier this week.

The Kangaroos’ list has healthy Tasmanian representation, with Bresnehan and the Haines twins joining Daria Bannister, Emma Humphries, Brittany Gibson, Maddison Smith and Jessie Williams in a star-studded squad.

Nicole Bresnehan was selected by the Kangaroos earlier in the week.

North Melbourne has been placed in a conference with the Western Bulldogs, Melbourne, Adelaide and Fremantle for the 2019 AFLW season.
