On Wednesday 17 May, 2017 the newly formed Tasmanian Football Foundation will host a gala event at Crown Palladium, celebrating and showcasing the rich history and memorable moments of Tasmanian football.
The evening will recognise Tasmania’s depth in AFL playing and coaching ranks, touch on the impact Tasmanians have had on the Australian Hall of Fame, relive and reminisce the 1990 Tasmanian State of Origin victory over Victoria and hear what Tasmania means to Richmond great, Matthew Richardson.
Over 500 people are expected to attend the major function that boasts some of the biggest names associated with Tasmanian footy. The line-up includes Tasmanian greats such as: Peter Hudson, Ian Stewart, the Baldock family in honour of Darrel, Matthew Richardson, Alastair Lynch, Rodney Eade, Chris Fagan, Brendon Bolton, the Gale brothers, the Atkins twins and Russell Robertson. Many current day stars will also be in attendance, including: Ben Brown, Jack Riewoldt and Grant Birchall, along with VIP’s such as Premier Will Hodgman, Gillon McLachlan and the AFL Executive.
Despite being a Tasmanian focused event, it is taking place in Victoria as a meaningful opportunity to connect with the many passionate Tasmanian expatriates. AFL Tasmania Chief Executive Rob Auld said the magnitude of the event speaks volumes on Tasmania’s standing in the game.
“The strength and credibility of these Tasmanian memories and moments is evidenced by over 500 people from all parts of the footballing landscape congregating in a location not in the state that is being celebrated.
“I don’t think there is another state in Australia that could dream about an event of this magnitude being hosted outside of their state,” Auld added.
The event is the first official function of the Tasmanian Football Foundation, which was launched last November and is spearheaded by advisory board chairman Peter Hudson.
The foundation has been established to provide a vehicle for primarily Tasmanian expatriates to give back to grassroots football in Tasmania. The foundation will focus its energy on the pillars of heritage, community and future, within the governance of the Australian Sports Foundation. The Tasmanian Football Foundation’s existence provides a credible and legitimate opportunity to future proof the strength of Tasmanian football.
The Advisory Board brings a set of diverse set of experience and skills that spans elite football performance as well as strong commercial acumen and direct links to Government and the AFL.
The Advisory Board members include:
Peter Hudson (Chairman)
Rob Auld (AFL Tasmania CEO)
James Henderson
Kate Kent
Matthew Richardson
Paul Sproule
Trish Squires
Errol Stewart
Advisory Board member and AFL Tasmania CEO, Auld believes the event will become its own piece of Tasmanian football history.
“We are incredibly excited; the foundation has been many years in the making and it is going to be extremely fulfilling to be able to commence the foundation’s mission at a gala event that will be a night to remember,” Auld said.
“We are looking forward to a brighter and stronger future for Tasmanian footy, together.”
The event commences at 7:00PM at Crown Palladium on Wednesday 17 May 2017.
