The Tasmanian Football Foundation Coaching Mentor Program was launched in February 2018 and mentors are now out right across the state work with junior coaches to assist and develop them on their journey in the game.
We will be providing updates on the Mentors as they work with junior coaches and sharing some of the stories and experiences.
The experienced Ben Atkin is one of the mentors and has commenced work with Claremont Junior Football Club.

Claremont Junior Football Club Report – April 2018
President – Brendan Flack
Ben is a dedicated coach with many skills to offer the Junior Coaches of Claremont Junior FC, our coaches are looking forward to the opportunity to tap into the knowledge and styles Ben has to offer.
It is great to see that feedback post 2017, specifically that surrounding the challenges to Develop, Retain and Inspire Coaches has led to the introduction of such an initiative. The program will deliver to all kids from those seeking AFL for participation & fun through to those looking to maximise and develop to the elite level.
Ben has outlined a program of group education encompassed with Q&A focus to ensure the coaches can identify the needs directly, follow up 1 on 1 skill and training plan development and then game day support, analysis and feedback session to close out the loop. Ben has also then indicated follow up to the specific need or questions as the circumstance arises.
Work already completed by Ben with one of our u10 Coaches leading into the season has already proven to deliver and excite those coaches whom are yet to receive.
The backing of the Tasmanian Football Foundation, AFL Tas, Current and Past AFL Coaches and Players along with the highly talented local coaching talent which has been recruited is truly exciting, it engages and shows the desired support of the dedicated volunteers that truly deserve the recognition of such a significant initiative.
I would also like to take the opportunity to thank the major sponsor behind the program Hydro Tasmania, it is great to see an Iconic Tasmania Business support at Community Grass Roots level.
Mentor – Ben Atkin
As a mentor to the under 8-12 coaches at Claremont Junior Football Club I have been impressed at the level of professionalism and organisation of the coaches I have worked with so far. Although it is only early in the season the kids seem to be really engaging in the drills being undertaken and the coaching staff are giving clear, simple instructions which keeps the players focused.
I feel very privileged to be given the chance to work with these coaches and players and believe the mentoring program is a great initiative by the Tasmanian Football Foundation to ensure that the future stars are getting the best possible start in the game.
Garry Barwick – U10 Coach
The Claremont U10 Red team are already seeing a noticeable improvement with the development of our juniors, thanks to the mentoring program.
As I enter my fourth year as a junior coach at Claremont Junior Football Club, the learning provided by Ben and the Foundation mentoring program has been invaluable to the continual improvement of my game day coaching techniques and my planning of training sessions to ensure the best learning environment is in place for our junior footballers.
