AFL Tasmania are pleased to announce the Tasmanian squad for Round 1 of the AFLW Under 18 National Championships to be held in Adelaide, next weekend.

Tasmania will play South Australia and Northern Territory during the first phase of the championships. An Allies squad will then be named featuring players from the three teams (Tasmania, South Australia and Northern Territory) for phase two of the championships in July, in a structure similar to the male championships.

Trent Bartlett is the Tasmanian Under 18 Girls Coach and he is excited by the emerging talent in his team, with many of the developing stars showing outstanding attributes despite only being new to the game.

“We are really excited by the talent in the group, we look forward to the girls showcasing their talent on game day.

“It is terrific to be providing an opportunity for some really talented girls to live out their dream and continue to strive to play AFL W.

“What is so pleasing is that we are starting to tap into first choice athletes, as a collective we’ve done a fantastic job of identifying and developing talent.

“The influx of talent attracted and developed from outside the game has been great to see as a coach,” Bartlett explained.

The players selected in the squad have been part of the Youth Girls State Academy, which has seen a significant improvement in both the skills and fitness of a host of talented athletes.

Excitingly, there may be as many as 7 to 10 Tasmanian players that receive Allies selection, depending on their form at the championships. The team are more than capable of performing at a high level, recording a win over Victoria in a recent practice match, ahead of the championships.

Tasmania has also continued its relationship with New Zealand, helping develop the countries top end talent. This year, Killarney Morey the 2016 New Zealand Youth Girls player of the year joins the team for the championships.

The squad will depart late next week with their first match against South Australia on Friday, May 12 at 6:00PM at West Adelaide Oval. They then have a rest day before facing Northern Territory on Sunday May 14, at 10:00AM, at West Adelaide Oval.
