Under 16 – Under 18
AFL Tasmania assembles squads for the Under 16, Under 17 and Under 18 age groups on a yearly basis.
The Under 16 squad competes at the National Championships, playing rival squads from across the country.
The Under 17 squad play at the AFL Academy Futures against rival states as they prepare for the draft year, the following season.
Under 18s is the pinnacle of the pathway as it is when players become draft eligible. Tasmania competes in the National Academy Series against academies from Sydney Swans, GWS, Brisbane Lions and Gold Coast. The top-performing Tasmanians are then selected to compete in the Under 18 National Championships in a combined team called the Allies.
Female Talent Pathway
Tasmania’s top female players compete at the National Championships at Under 16 and Under 18 level, with the best talent picked to compete for the Allies at Under 18 level.
The female talent pathway culminates with the Tassie Kangaroos, Tasmania’s aligned AFLW club. North Melbourne FC and Tasmania won an AFL Women’s licence with a joint submission in 2017, giving Tasmania’s elite Women’s players a direct pathway to the top.
The recent announcement from AFL CEO Gillon McLachlan has seen a $200,000 injection into the talent pathway in Tasmania. This funding boost assists in subsidising over 100 players within AFL endorsed AFL Tasmania talent programs. It is an exciting announcement that will significantly reduce the burden on Tasmanian families within the talent pathway.
AFL Tasmania will be applying a levy subsidy to AFL endorsed talent programs from 2018, in the process, we want to be clear on the programs that the subsidy applies to. The programs that will receive subsidisation are listed below.
