Talent

Youth Talent Program – Ages 12 – 15
What is it?
The Youth Talent Program nurtures talent from the age of 12 to 15, developing emerging athletes from right across the state.
Under 12 and 13
Each season over 100 boys are selected in total to participate in an elite talent program for the best talent in the Under 12 and Under 13 age groups, with footballers selected from the North West, Northern and Southern regions.
Each age group will compete in two regional games where the best players from each region will form squads and compete against each other. The program will also culminate in an intrastate match that will showcase Tasmania’s very best talent.
Under 14
Each season over 100 boys are selected in total to participate in an elite talent program for the best talent in the Under 14 age group, with footballers selected from the North West, Northern and Southern regions.
The Under 14 age group will compete in one regional and one intrastate game, which will form the basis of selection for a squad that will attend and compete in the State Zone Trials with GWS and Sydney Swans in an Academy Carnival and Camp in Albury, Victoria.
Under 15
Each season over 100 boys are selected in total to participate in an elite talent program for the best talent in the Under 14 age group, with footballers selected from the North West, Northern and Southern regions.
The Under 14 age group will compete in one regional and one intrastate game which will form the basis of selection for a squad that will attend and compete in the V-Line Cup in Victoria, a carnival which showcases some of the country’s most prodigious young footballing talent.

State Academy
Under 16 – Under 18
AFL Tasmania assemble squads for the Under 16, Under 17 and Under 18 age groups on a yearly basis.
The Under 16 squad competes at the National Championships, playing rival squads from across the country.
The Under 17 squad play at the AFL Academy Futures against rival states as they prepare for the draft year, the following season.
Under 18s is the pinnacle of the pathway as it is when players become draft eligible. Tasmania compete in the National Academy Series against academies from Sydney Swans, GWS, Brisbane Lions and Gold Coast. The top performing Tasmanians are then selected to compete in the Under 18 National Championships in a combined team called the Allies.
Female Talent Pathway
Tasmania’s top female players compete at the National Championships at Under 16 and Under 18 level, with the best talent picked to compete for the Allies at Under 18 level.
The female talent pathway culminates with the Tassie Kangaroos, Tasmania’s aligned AFLW club. North Melbourne FC and Tasmania won an AFL Women’s licence with a joint submission in 2017, giving Tasmania’s elite Women’s players a direct pathway to the top.
