The 2018 AFL Draft Combine got underway earlier this week, with the country’s brightest young prospects being put through their paces with a rigorous week of testing.

Four Tasmanians – Nicholas Baker, Chayce Jones, Tarryn Thomas and Fraser Turner – are in attendance, with all four having interviews with AFL clubs during the week, with Wednesday seeing the group have their field and goal kicking and tested.

Kicking Test

The Nathan Buckley kicking test sees each player take six kicks from various distances and angles. The player receives the ball from a caller, who then randomly requests a specific kick (20 metres left or right, 30 metres left or right and 40 metres left or right) be made to a target judge.

The player has 25 seconds to complete the six kicks and is allocated between 1 (for a poor kick) and 5 (excellent) points for each kick.

Tarryn Thomas finished as the equal best player at the combine for this test with a score of 27/30 (90%).

The Tasmanian trend continued in the top 10 for the kicking test, with Chayce Jones and Nicholas Baker both finishing with 22/30 – 73%.

Fraser Turner, although not in the top 10, only finished one point behind Baker and Jones, finishing with a score of 21/30 – 70%.

Goal Kicking Test

The Brad Johnson Goal Kicking test is conducted with players wearing boots, with four ‘man on the mark’ apparatus set up at various distances from goal on specific angles.

Players are required to take five kicks for goal: two set shots, a right-footy snap, a left-foot snap and a kick on the run. The test must be completed within a maximum of 50 seconds.

Scoring is based on how many goals and behinds players kick; a goal is only awarded if the ball goes between the two posts and above a 2.5-metre height marker.

Tarryn Thomas again starred in this test, kicking 25 points out of a possible 30 (going at 83%) to finish in equal second.

Chayce Jones finished at 63% with 19 points, while Nicholas Baker and Fraser Turner both scored at 50% – finishing with 15 points.
