Northern Tasmanian Football Association

After a year off in 2020 the NTFA finally returned over the weekend, with Bracknell and South Launceston playing out a back-and-forth thriller in Youngtown. A four goal second term saw the Bulldogs take a narrow lead into half time, before Bracknell responded with four goals of their own in the third to pull away. They managed to hold off a late charge from South Launceston to claim a six-point win, with Leigh Harding a standout in the midfield.

Old Scholars Football Association

The Old Scholars kicked off with a Grand Final rematch in round one, one of many across the state over the weekend. In fresh conditions at Queenborough, it was Hutchins turning the tables to record an 11-point win over OHA. The reigning premiers started strongly and led at both quarter-time and half-time, but a four-goal third quarter proved to be decisive as Hutchins moved into the lead and never looked back. Former Geelong forward George Burbury led the way with five goals, half of his team’s total, in an impressive display. Elsewhere in the league, St Virgils forward Luke Potter started his season with a bang, booting 14 goals in a win over the returning Richmond Blues.

North-West Football League

Round two of the NWFL was headlined by another Grand Final rematch, with 2020 premiers Burnie travelling to Devonport Oval to take on the Magpies. A tight first quarter might have had fans expecting a nail-biter, but Devonport powered ahead in the second and ran away with the contest, winners by 57 points at the final siren. Caleb Van Buuren was the spark, kicking three goals in the space of seven minutes in the second quarter to wrest the momentum Devonport’s way. 18-year-old twins Oliver and Fletcher Kelly earned praise from coach Kurt Byard, kicking four goals between them and putting in a mountain of work around the ground.

North-West Football League Women

It was a hard slog in round two of the NWFL Women’s league, and it was Ulverstone causing an upset with a four-point win over the reigning premiers Wynyard. It was a goalless game, and both sides recorded at least one completely scoreless quarter, but Ulverstone were able to will themselves to victory with a 7-3 final score. In the league’s other game, the Penguin Two Blues made a big statement with a 48-point win over 2020 runners-up Latrobe to claim top spot on the ladder.

NAB League Boys

It was a heartbreaking loss for the Tasmania Devils boys in their first game of the season, falling to the Calder Cannons by one point at Windsor Park. A strong breeze and icy conditions made it tough going, but the Devils put on a burst in the second quarter and held the Cannons scoreless to take a lead into the main break. The visitors bounced back with the wind behind them to storm into the lead at the final change, and while the Devils dominated the last with seven scoring shots to two, they could only kick one goal to fall agonizingly short. Oliver Sanders racked up a game-high 29 disposals, while Sam Banks had 28 featuring ten rebound 50s.
