NAB League Boys

The Tasmania Devils fought hard but were ultimately outclassed in round 11 of the NAB League Boys, falling to the Sandringham Dragons by 38 points at the Twin Ovals. The Dragons were impenetrable in defence early, keeping the Devils goalless in the first half while kicking four majors of their own to take a commanding 31-point lead into the main break. Some wayward kicking to that point kept the Devils in the contest, and they hit back with goals in the third and fourth terms while defending resolutely under pressure. That saw them keep the margin steady through the second half, but they were unable to reel in the Dragons any further. Tyler McGinnis led the Devils with 25 disposals, his highest tally of the season, while Tony Aganas and Jye Menzie kicked one goal apiece.

Darwin Football Association

Queenstown have claimed an important win and extended their lead atop the DFA table, beating third-placed Yeoman by 65 points at Wivenhoe. The Crows would have come into the game full of confidence with just one loss this season and a percentage of over 400, but Yeoman hung tough in the first quarter. Five scoring shots to three could have seen the game close at the first change, but Yeoman could only manage one goal from those chances to Queenstown’s four. That gave the ladder leaders a handy buffer heading into the second, and they skipped away further from there to build a comfortable lead. They booted six goals in the second quarter to essentially put the game to bed, slowly pulling further away to finish with a ten-goal win. Toby Lutwyche kicked six goals for Queenstown to narrow the gap at the top of the league goalkicking; he now sits in second place with 56 goals. Yeoman’s Peter Fulton did just enough to stay ahead, though, kicking four majors despite the loss to take his season tally to 58.

Old Scholars Football Association

DOSA claimed an important four points in the Old Scholars, keeping touch with the top three with a 27-point win over University. The first quarter was an arm wrestle as both sides struggled to break clear, with two goals apiece leaving things evenly poised at the first change. The Roosters started to fire in the second quarter, building a narrow lead at half-time, but it was the third term that saw them take complete control of the contest. They booted seven goals in an impressive burst, and while that was also University’s most productive quarter the Rainbows still found themselves trailing by 26 points at the final break. That margin would prove to be the difference as both sides broke even in the final term, kicking three goals each and allowing the Roosters to celebrate at the final siren. Braden Barwick and Michael Fisher kicked five goals each for the winners, leading an impressive attacking display, while Benjamin Halton booted three for the Rainbows. DOSA now sit just one win behind Hutchins in third place, and two wins off the top of the ladder.

Northern Tasmanian Football Association Women

With a logjam of teams building at the top of the NTFAW ladder, Hillwood kept themselves in the thick of the action with a four-point win over South Launceston. One goal apiece in the first term saw the Sharks lead by just two points at the first change, and while they kept their noses in front throughout they struggled to build a match-winning buffer. South Launceston were able to match them at every turn, leaving the game in the balance at three-quarter time with Hillwood ahead by just eight points. The Bulldogs made a late push and produced five scoring shots to one in the final term, but they could manage just one goal to leave them agonisingly short at the final siren. Narine Maurangi was the star for Hillwood with four goals, with Dakotah Leary leading South Launceston with two majors. The result sees Hillwood stay in second spot on the ladder, albeit with more games played than many of the teams around them.
