The AFL has today released the names of 106 players invited to the 2022 NAB AFLW Draft Combine, with four Tasmanians among those to receive invites.

Candice Belbin (Ulverstone), Claire Ransom (North Hobart), Meghan Gaffney (Ulverstone) and Madison Brazendale (Launceston) have all been selected to attend, placing them in the upper echelon of prospects in the 2022 draft class.

Belbin ranked seventh in the NAB League with 7.8 tackles per game (min. two games played) while also collecting 12.8 disposals per contest. A hard nut with a willingness to defend from the midfield, she never takes a backward step.

After finishing second in the Tasmania Devils NAB League Best and Fairest last season, Ransom has continued to shine in 2022. She averaged 19.4 disposals and 4.6 tackles per game in the NAB League this season, and her work rate and silky skills have made her one of the most damaging two-way midfielders in the country.

Gaffney returned to the Devils in 2022 as an over-age player, taking on a leadership role as vice-captain and continuing to develop as a player. Her season averages of 14 disposals and 4.2 tackles per game are impressive enough, but it’s her unmatched pace and penetrating kicking that have made her one of the best wingers in the NAB League.

Lining up on the wing for the Devils, Brazendale was regularly named among the side’s best players and her elite athletic traits were on full display. She averaged 17 disposals and 4.7 tackles per game, working tirelessly in attack and defence and giving the Devils plenty of run when in possession.

All four were standout performers for the Tasmania Devils in the 2022 NAB League Girls season, and they were all members of the combined Allies squad that took part in the NAB AFLW U18 Championships. In addition, Ransom represented the AFLW Academy and both Gaffney and Belbin played for the Under-23 All Stars in last week’s showcase game between the two sides.

This year’s NAB AFLW Draft Combine will again be state-based, with dates and locations to be announced.

AFL Talent Ambassador Kevin Sheehan said players invited to the 2022 NAB AFLW Draft Combine represented the next crop of AFLW stars.“We are very excited about the high level of talent within this group of future stars of the AFLW,” Sheehan said.“The 2022 version of the NAB AFLW Draft Combine will be shorter than those held in previous years, however the on-field performance of this group of players over the past season has provided a great indication that they will have a huge impact on the NAB AFLW competition.”
